Carrier tape is primarily utilized in the electronic component assembly industry. Used in conjunction with cover tape (or sealing tape), it serves to house and secure electronic components-such as resistors, capacitors, transistors, and diodes-within the tape's pockets. By sealing the cover tape over the carrier tape, a closed packaging system is formed, designed to protect the electronic components from contamination and damage during transit. During the component placement process, the cover tape is peeled away; automated placement equipment then utilizes the precise positioning provided by the carrier tape's sprocket holes to sequentially extract the components from their pockets and mount them onto a printed circuit board (PCB). Beyond SMT assembly lines, carrier tape is also widely employed in the transportation, warehousing, and reel-packaging processes for electronic components.

With the ongoing miniaturization of semiconductor devices and advancements in packaging technologies, the functionality of carrier tape continues to expand. For instance, carrier tapes featuring integrated tracking capabilities can facilitate production process traceability, thereby meeting the rigorous standards required in sectors such as automotive electronics.
